Let’s make a short tour in the historic centre of Lecce, the so-called "Baroque Lady", characterized by portals, churches, steeples, monuments and several buildings, all of them representing baroque on its peak.
From the portal “Porta Napoli” you enter in the old town, a very characteristic area full of beautiful eighteenth century buildings. In a few steps you arrive at the main attractions, such as the church “Santa Maria della Provvidenza” and “Santa Maria di Costantinopoli”.
Walking along Via Umberto I you can see the Palace Adorno, a building of the '500, and the Basilica “Santa Croce”, symbol of the town and the Baroque era, flagship of Apulia. The famous cathedral of Lecce stands out in “Piazza Duomo”, from where you can also see the bell tower and the Palaces of episcopacy and seminary.
The Cathedral is dedicated to Maria SS. Assunta and was rebuilt several times over the centuries: in 1144 the first and in 1659 the last time.
